How do you save money?

“I don’t really save. I’m an impulse buyer. When there’s something that I really want—like a record, or a piece of furniture—I’ll just buy it. It’s mostly records. I’ve spent so much at Love Garden. My employee discount there is a good way to save money, though. I don’t know, whenever there’s something I really want, I don’t feel guilty buying it. After I’ve paid rent and utilities, I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m a working girl and I can do what I want.’ I don’t fixate on money. Guys buying me beer at the bar saves money, but the boys who buy them are generally right wingers who tell me people should get over slavery and that affirmative action makes them sick. I’ll take the drink, but I’m not impressed. A good way make money is to be a Republican.”

What do you splurge on?

“If I really, really want to splurge I’ll buy a dress with a built in slip. That’s a big deal. I can only afford that about twice a year. You go in and spend $200 at Anthropologie, so it’s serious. I’ll walk out with my head down if I don’t get that dress. Shopping is always an event—mom taught me that. You dye your hair, get your Big Sip soda, and go to town.”
