Description
In September 2007, Lawrence got its fourth BBQ joint, located in a gas station. Once <a href="/places/buckys_drive_in/">Bucky's</a> closed, Biemer's moved into that spacious, sunny space at the corner of Ninth and Iowa.
While every joint has its own personality, this one's maybe different than most around here and in KC. Owner Jim Biemick is originally from Illinois (he's been in Lawrence since the '80s and BBQing seriously since the '70s), which means he comes with the eastern-style approach to meats. Namely in-house-made vinegar sauces that enhance the flavor of meat a la salt, instead of the KC-style molasses-based sauces that tend to add to (or cover up) the flavor of the meat.
Specialties include 1 lb. stuffed baked potatoes with meat ($5) or without ($4), intensely flavored pulled pork, a turkey offering that already has its own local following, and unique vinegar-based cole slaw (vs creamy) that's as good on a pork or turkey sandwich as on its own.
Given the substantial serving sizes, prices are more than reasonable: about $5 for sandwiches, $7 for rib dinner, $9.75 for 1/2 slab, and $15.75 for a full slab.
